Shadyside - August 24, 2018
It didn’t take the Potters long to prove they had become a different team in 2018 as they capped off a five-play drive on their second possession to score their initial TD of this game when Jalen Moman scored from the 20 with 2:31 remaining in the first quarter. Dominik Vallera added the conversion kick and the home team never looked back.
Coach Josh Ludwig and his team tallied once again in the first half with Moman, this time at the conclusion of a 90-yard/ten play drive, doing the honors from 17 yards out at the 2:54 mark in quarter number two. This time, the Blue and White used combinations of runs by Moman and Derek Carter, along with pass receptions by Nick Woodyard and Lane Kopras to make it 14-0 following Vallera’s conversion kick.
The only other score in the game came when Shadyside made it interesting with 4:36 left to play on a Anthony Coggins, four-yard TD carry. The play was set up by a 24-yard pass from Coggins to Kelly Hendershot, who caught 11 balls for 130 yards on the night. Angel Velassquez converted to make it 14-7, which concluded the scoring, but not the excitement, as the Tigers attempted to pull off a hook and laterial play that nearly worked with time running out.
COACH’S CORNER:
“We were pleased with the outcome, but concerned with the injury to Moman,” said a happy Coach Josh Ludwig following he game. “He played a heck of a game and Peyton Reed hit it correctly when he told reporters we will not be the same old team this year. We are concerned about Jalen Momen who left the game early in the fourth quarter with a knee injury, but we will stay tuned,” the coach concluded."
DIGGER’S DUGOUT:
“Shadyside had a class act headed by their head coach, Mark Holenka, who has been at the helm for 19 years. A 1975 graduate of Bethany College, he succeeded Ty Fleming, who led the Tigers to their first state championship in 2006. The Shadyside stadium is named for Fleming who currently serves on the Tiger’s coaching staff. It was nice to see former EL coach Bob Thayer in the crowd, as well Jerry McKenna a world renowed sculptor who was in the area for the dedication of the Calvin Jones statue at Harding Stadium in Steubenville earlier in the day."
